Chicago Park Attractions to Hit in the Summer
So it is summer in Chicago. Everyone has an idea that they should head for the beach or the parks, but what do you do when you get there? As it turns out, Chicago’s parks are some of the best in the world and the most fun to be around in the summer. Here are some of the highlights.
Grant Park: Grant Park is massive, extending down from Randolph Street in the Chicago Loop (along the Lakeshore) far to the south. Attractions include the Art Institute of Chicago (with AC and world famous pieces to experience), Buckingham Fountain (a massive fountain decorated with all sorts of statues—bigger than you would believe), numbers of music venues and fields that are busy at different times of the week, the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Spirit of Music Park which plays host throughout the summer to Chicago Summerdance, a free music series with a large dance area and free lessons presented by dance studios from around the city.
Further south you have such humble attractions as the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, Soldier Field, and various sporting fields available to the public. You can also investigate Northerly Island, home of the Adler Planetarium. This man-made peninsula once held an airport known as Meigs Field, was involved in the World’s Fair in 1933-34, is heavily decorated with statues, and stands as some of the nicest green space in Chicago.
Millennium Park, of course, is well known for hosting free music events through the summer, most of which allow hundreds of individuals to come and camp out on the grassy field underneath the concert hall and eat lunches or have wine while they relax and listen. Fountains, the bean, and a café complete Millennium Park.
If you head north you pass the tiny park space around Navy Pier, and then a number of beautiful beaches named for the east west roads on level with them. In Lincoln Park, on most weekdays of the summer, these beaches swarm with intense volleyball players competing in the Sport and Social Club, though there is also a dodge ball court / hockey court along the way and various other attractions north of the Lincoln Park Zoo.
